He Makana Aloha Music Program is a grassroots, community-supported initiative founded by Native Hawaiian musician and artist MAKA. Born out of deep kuleana (responsibility) to the youth of Hawaii, the program steps in to bridge structural funding gaps in public arts education by bringing music workshops, Summer camps, and instruments to children (keiki) across the islands.
Core Philosophy & Impact Areas
- Cultural Grounding: Rather than just teaching technical notes, the program utilizes music as a powerful vehicle for heritage preservation, self-discovery, and emotional expression, encouraging youth to find and sing their own “heart songs.”
- Crisis & Disaster Relief: He Makana Aloha actively deploys to communities facing hardship. Following the devastating fires in Lahaina, Maui, MAKA and her family integrated the program into frontline relief efforts, hosting music camps and community concerts to provide vital spiritual healing, comfort, and restorative connection for traumatized children and families. HMA's next camp will take place in Na'alehu over Fall Break 2026 as the community there are still facing setbacks from the devastating damage caused by Hurricane Lala. Following the Fall Camp, HMA hosts a free community concert in Na'alehu where students will have the amazing opportunity to perform alongside Maka and 808 Ohana.
- Serving Underserved Regions: The initiative travels directly into rural and isolated pockets of Hawaii where families have little to no access to expensive music lessons or private instrument purchases, ensuring every child has an equitable opportunity to experience the transformative power of melody.
Through He Makana Aloha, Maka is cultivating more than just future musicians; she is actively empowering a resilient next generation to stand firm in their roots, carry forward the values of aloha ʻāina (love for the land), and heal their communities from the inside out.
Operating independent of restrictive government grants, the program relies entirely on direct community partnerships, instrument drives, and grassroots donations to sustain its mission. Please consider making a donation today!
